Shayne became a patrolling member of the club when he obtained his Bronze Medallion in 1968. He became Patrol Captain for many years along with stints as Secretary and Treasurer. An outstanding board and ski paddler, he won many state medals in individual and team events. He was also part of the team who were responsible for starting the Nipper program for junior surf life savers in 1973.
